“What an incredible week! I’m now recuperating from the huge
effort the GB team and I put into the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships
in Milan over the last four days.
"After my success at the Junior European Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland
I was a little bit more nervous than normal going into the training sessions
ahead of the qualifying rounds for the competition. In Switzerland I won four
gold and one bronze medals, creating a high degree of expectation for me to
replicate that success in Milan - only this time in my first senior competition.
It was important to stay focused on my routines and not to get sidetracked.
"Being in the first group at the qualifiers, I faced a long seven hour wait on Friday to find out if I had qualified for the All Around, Pommel and Pbar finals. In the All Around Final which took place the following day, I worked well across the apparatus: HBar, Parallel Bars, Vault and Pommel Horse, with just two small errors on Rings and Floor, securing second place and winning Britain's first ever All Around medal in a major championships.
"The single apparatus finals came the following day, and with tired muscles but a focused mind I put in a good performance on the Pommel Horse to secure a Bronze medal. In the Pbar final I made a slight error that saw me finish in 7th place, but was otherwise pleased with my routines. My fellow competitors put in some brilliant routines, with Yann Cucherat of France eventually claiming the gold medal on Pbars and Kristian Berki of Hungary the gold on Pommel after a long but amazing day.
